Henry and Katherine Waldruff Determan came to Breda from Clinton, Iowa about 1880.
They farmed and later owned the property and ran a saloon where the Post Office is
now located. Their children were: Will, Nick, Anna, Catherine (Sr Tarcisia, F.S.P.A.O. Joe and Ed.
Nick Determan (1890-1969) was employed in the
Ricke Store as a young man. In 1910, in partnership with Frank Bohnenkamp, the
store was purchased and operated as Bohnenkamp and Determan General Merchandise
until 1947. From 1947, until his death, Nick Determan was sole owner and
continued operation of Determan’s Store. He and Mathilda Brinker were married in 1915 and
were the parents of: Melvin (1917-1972), Donald, who died of diphtheria at six
weeks of age, and Illa Mae (Neumayer)
