CARROLL. Population, 3,546. The judicial seat of county of the same name, in the central portion of which it is situated, on the C. & N. W. and C. G. W. Rys., 93 miles n. e. of Council Bluffs, 257 w. of Clinton and 100 n. w. of Des Moines, is surrounded by the best of farm country. Laid out in 1867, incorporated 2 years later, and in 1892 made a city of the second class, it now has a number of jobbing houses, a $50,000 court house, 3 banks, good public schools, Baptist, Catholic, Church of God, German Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, a Carnegie library, Y. M. C. A., a hospital, a public hall, which cost $10,000, seating capacity 600, a Masonic Temple completed at a cost of $50,000, and a domestic science school completed at a cost of $100,000. The city is lighted by electricity, and has a plant that supplies the town with hot water. The water works is controlled by the city, and there is a good fire department and an extensive sewer system. Four weekly newspapers, the Herald, Sentinel, Times and Der Demokrat, are published.
