Cecil Hicks Funeral Services This Morning for Accident Victim Cecil Hicks, 68, was crushed to death Monday afternoon as he was hitching a tractor to a disc. Alone at the time, the tragedy is believed to have happened shortly after noon, as he was getting ready for the afternoon's work. Apparently the machine was thrown into gear and he was caught between the lever and the seat of the tractor. The throttle was pulled so low that the machine stalled. When he did not come home for supper Mrs. Hicks went to the fence to look for him. Seeing the two dogs at the machine, she called them for some time before they would come in. Since she is in frail health herself, she was not able to go to the field, and so she called John Birkey, who discovered what had happened. Cecil Hicks was born May 4, 1874, on the farm southwest of Manson which was his home during his entire life. He received his education in the rural school near his home. He married Kate Masterson March 23, 1927, at Rockwell City. Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife, three sisters, Mrs. Lula Miller of Des Moines, Mrs. Effie Reed of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Flossie Pogeler of Manson and three brothers, Andy of Sierra Madre, Calif., Floyd of Fort Dodge and Charles of Manson. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Frank Masterson of California, John Masterson of Manson, and Mrs. Leo Collins of Rockwell City. Funeral services were held this morning at St. Thomas Catholic church, the Rev. Father James Greteman singing the requiem mass. Six nephews, Claud Wing, Dale Hicks, Kenneth Pogeler, Boyd Imhoff, Glenn King and Meredith Imhoff were pallbearers. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery. |
