Mrs. Betsy A. Hickox Obituary from the Rockwell City, Iowa newspaper On Monday evening, February 13, at 6:50 o'clock at the home of her son, W.H. Hickox, occurred the death of Grandmother Hickox, aged seventy years and twenty-nine days. Mrs. Hickox was a great sufferer during her last months on earth but bore physical pain with fortitude. Her life extended beyond the three score and ten years alloted to man and was full of good works and Christian living. The disease which was the immediate cause of her death was lung trouble but she also suffered intensely from a tumor in her side. Betsy Ann Colbert was born at Scottsville, Allen County, Kentucky, January 14, 1823. Her father, as she grew to womanhood, a well known Methodist minister of the Rock River conference in Illinois, being located at Geneseo at that time. She was converted at the age of fifteen and all through her life was a consistent member of the Methodist church. In September 1839 she was united in marriage to Joseph Hickox, and for fifty years was his faithful companion in life. Eight children blessed their union. Only two of whom survive, W.H. Hickox of this city, and Mrs. Clifford Smith, of Blanket Texas. In 1890 Mr. and Mrs. Hickox removed from Geneseo, Ill., to Rockwell City to be with their children. Here Mr. Hickox died December 21, 1890, and the lonely wife was allowed to journey on without him. She did not long remain however, but in little more than three years was called to the "other shore." The funeral was held in the M.E. church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, a was attended by a sorrowing concourse of friends and neighbors of the afflicted family. Rev. C.B. Winter preached a sermon of consolation to the bereaved ones, pointing out the fact that the closing of a long and useful Christian life is not a time for the sorrow that might come in the death of the young, but rather a time for the spiritual uplifting that leads us to feel that we must not keep the aged ones but rather seek to go to them in heaven. The remains were laid to rest in the Rockwell City cemetery. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their affliction.
