Butler County Education Center
The following photos were contributed by Clayton and Bonnie
Thomas. Mr. Thomas states that "The district No. 1 schoolhouse, according to
Irvin H. Hart’s History of Butler County, Iowa, pp. 287-288, “was erected in
district No. 1 on section 13, and built of logs...” “This log schoolhouse stood
near the site of the present schoolhouse in said district No. 1. It was used for
school purposes until the summer of 1865, when a frame building, 22x30 feet, was
erected at a cost of $700.”
My parent’s diary farm was next to this latest school and essentially was in our
back yard, between Camp Comfort Road and Blue Bird Lane and in section 13. I am
in the 1941 picture, so I have some personal interest as well. Both of my
parents are in the 1923 picture, (Lloyd Thomas and Marlys Kingery).
