Even though the Fairfield Cemetery is not located within the Butler
County boundaries, we choose to add its information to our book.
Because of its location being so near New Hartford, because many of
Butler Counties settlers are buried here, and because New Hartford
citizens celebrate Memorial Day at the Fairfield Cemetery, we felt
it indeed needs to be recorded. Twenty-two soldiers are buried in
the Fairfield Cemetery.
Land for a public burial ground in Section 5, of Fairfield Township
was purchased by the Sherman School District in July, 1857, from
Calvin and Mary Walker and jasper and Roxeyann Ingalls for $25.00.
A Fairfield Cemetery Association was organized was organized in
1884, and in 1887 the school district directors deeded the ground to
that organization. Nine years later in June of 1896, the old
organization was withdrawn, and the power given to the Ladies'
Fairfield Organization. The immediately installed two iron seats at
$13.00 and hitching posts at $2.00.
Reorganization took place in 1922, and that Fairfield Association
served until March of 1960, when the deeds were turned over to the
Trustees of the township.
Fairfield Cemetery is located one-half mile south of the Beaver
Township line in Fairfield Township, Grundy County, Iowa. The
cemetery lies on the south side of the road. It is divided into
north and south and each row is numbered from one to twenty-one. By
using the "S" (south) and "N" (north) and the row number, you will
be able to find a certain grave stone on the cemetery map.
