Buchanan County Home/Poor Farm
(Abandoned)
Washington Twp. 25
The County Home was purchased 1861, and consisted of 194 acres. 120 acres was bought Hathaway Estate and the rest from Mr. VanEtten. In 1881 it was known as the Poor Farm. 1914 it consisted of 220 acres with an average number of 16 people living there although they had a capacity of 20 people. They took in old people with no families to care for them, people that went broke and had no place to go, widows, unwed mothers and orphans until homes were found for them. They also had whole families living there. All residents worked on the farm for their keep. Some people were there a short time and some stayed until they died. There was land set aside for burials. Each person buried there had a cement headstone with only a number on it. Through the years the cemetery became run done and uncared for. With the changing of administration the information corresponding with the numbered headstones was lost. Years later a new well cared for cemetery was established. The first burial was in 1964
