INDEPENDENCE,
Capital of Buchanan County, lies near the center of the county. It is eight miles west of Winthrop, and sixty-nine from Dubuque. Independence is an incorporated city, and contains about 3,000 inhabitants. The first settlement was made here in 1846 by Rufus B. Clark. The following year a hotel was built, and afterwards a store was opened. The town soon commenced a healthy growth which has been kept up to the present time. Located in one of the best agricultural districts, Independence is admirably situated for trade. The Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad furnishes easy and rapid communication with the best markets. This brings to this point large quantities of grain and other farm products. The Wapsipinicon river, upon both sides of which Independence is situated, affords an abundance of power for manufacturing purposes. A new school house, and the court house situated on an eminence near the river, are prominent objects.

Besides a large number of trading establishments, Independence supports several large manufacturing establishments, among which are wagon and carriage shops, a plow factory, saw mill, seed sower manufactory, one foundry, one flouring mill, two breweries, one of which, the Independence brewery, Charles Seeland, proprietor, makes and distributes large quantities of excellent lager beer to the towns along the line of the railroad.
