It is Charles Albin Schaffter and not Schaeffer who is buried in Eagle Grove. Charles Albin Schaffter was born on June 1, 1837 in Switzerland and lived in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia and Batavia, Kane County, Illinois before moving to Iowa. His son, Eugene, was born in 1864 in Lynchburg, Virginia. In the 1860 census, he is enumerated as C. Albin Shaffter in Lynchburg, VA; in 1880 as C. Alvin Scheffter in Batavia, Kane, Illinois and in 1850 in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana (where his parents died in 1847). Charles Schaffter served as Superintendent of Printing in Virginia during the Civil War.

Death of Editor Charles A. Schaffter
EAGLE GROVE, Sept. 18, Special: Mr. Charles A. Schaffter, editor of the Eagle Grove Gazette died at 5 o'clock this afternoon. This news will be read with very general regret throughout Iowa, as Mr. Schaffter had an extended acquaintance as an Iowa editor and as a citizen. In this city he had always held a high place in the esteem of all our citizens wherever known. He was the founder of the Gazette and has ever since devoted his time and ability in the interest of his paper and his town. His success has been marked in the Gazette’s assuming front rank among the specially strong and ably edited country newspapers of the state. Mr. Schaffter’s sickness dates back about two years, when he had an attack of la grippe, this afterwards developed into Bright's disease, which has been gradually working its inroads. Mr. Schaffter has done but very little work on his paper during the summer, this work devolving mostly upon Mrs. Schaffter and their son, Eugene. Last Saturday Mr. Schaffter went to his office feeling about as usual, and was writing a letter when he was stricken with brain paralysis. He was immediately taken home where he remained in a state of unconsciousness. This was the immediate cause of his death. General sorrow is the feeling heard expressed on the streets and everywhere. Mr. Schaffter was born in Hontier, Grandvai, Switzerland, June 1, 1837. came to America at the age of 7. Began the printing trade at the age of 12. Has always followed this trade. He came to Iowa from Illinois in 1882, and in April of that year founded the Eagle Grove Gazette. His paper has always been strongly republican. He has always figured prominently in politics in this district and was particularly devoted in his friendship for Col. Henderson. Mr. Schaffter was prominent also in secret order work having served two terms as deputy grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias in this state. He has for years been recognized as one of the able counsellors at the Grand Lodge services. His townspeople have shown their faith in his integrity by keening him, during the whole time of his residence here, town clerk. He has been honored by the Upper Des Moines Editorial Association by twice being elected its president. A wife and child, Mr. Eugene Schaffter, a young man of splendid abilities, are left.
