Charles B. "Charlie" Larson, age 95, a longtime farmer and resident of rural Goodell, IA, died, July 11, 2019, at MercyOne North Iowa Hospice-Mason City, IA, after a short battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be Monday, July 15, 2019, 10:30 AM, at the Klemme United Methodist Church, Klemme, IA. The Reverend Leila Blackburn will be officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Klemme Military Unit will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-5 PM at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 East Main Street, Klemme. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the services at church Monday. Memorials in Charlie's name may be directed to MercyOne North Iowa Hospice-Mason City, the Klemme United Methodist Church, or to the donor's choice.

Charles Bernard Larson, the son of Elmer and Leila (Miller) Larson, was born on May 31, 1924, in Webster City, IA. He was one of 12 children in the family. His childhood years were spent in the Webster City area where he attended school. At age 16 he went to work as a laborer in a factory in Webster City. Then he enlisted in the United States Navy in World War II, commencing his training at the Naval Training Center in Farragut, Idaho, on Feb. 23, 1943. Charles spent the next 6 years proudly serving his country on various Navy Vessels including the USS McCord, USS Repose, USS Antietam, and the majority of his tenure at sea was spent on the USS Windom Bay. Each of ship brought different rankings and roles that he fulfilled. One of his greatest adversities and accomplishments during his military years was serving and surviving Typhoon Cobra. Charlie was Honorably Discharged Feb. 10, 1949. Some of his commendations included WW II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, American Theatre Medal and China Service Medal.

Charles was united in marriage to Minnie Ubben on June 24, 1953 at the Presbyterian Church in Kamrar, IA. Eventually, the couple moved to the Klemme area in 1955, and began farming. The two of them worked side by side for the next 44 years in all aspects of the farming operations, working the land, raising and caring for the livestock, and sharing a wonderful life on the farm. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Ronald and Bernard. They relished their role as parents and strived to provide their boys with a loving and meaningful upbringing, teaching them the values of hard work, respect of others, and many other characteristics that they to shall pass onto the next generations of family.

Charlie loved to garden and share his harvest with family and friends. He was an avid baker and over the years he would often share his baked goods and other delights from his kitchen. Charles and Minnie had taken a several trips over the years to visit Bernard's family in Texas and he had been on some fishing excursions to Minnesota. Charlie loved to spend time with his family, whether it was a birthday, graduation, the birth of a new grand or great grandchild, or any other occasion. He relished the role of being husband, dad, and grandpa. The grandkids loved to visit the farm and going on tractor rides with grandpa.

After a 44 year life journey together, Minnie passed away on March 18, 1998. Charles continued to live on the farm for most of the remainder of his 95 years on earth. He continued to share his baked goods with others, enjoyed times playing games and working jigsaw puzzles. Recently, Charlie lived at Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City.

Those who knew Charlie will fondly remember the twinkling in his eyes, his wonderful smile, soft voice, and friendly demeanor. His family will cherish bountiful memories of him as a loving husband, father, grandpa, and a man who loved all that life on the farm brought with it. He was an excellent farmer and steward of the land and livestock.

His memory will be carried forward by his sons: Ron (Lori) Larson, Mason City, IA, and Bernard (Sheryl) Larson, Round Rock, TX; grandchildren: Bryan Larson and Keri Larson, both of Mason City; Nathan (Laurie) Larson and their twin daughters, Melanie and Alyssa Larson, all of Victoria, TX; Travis Larson and special friend, Rynita Forrer, Round Rock, TX; and one brother Dean (Shirley) Larson, Story City, IA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie; his parents, and ten siblings. Andrews Funeral Home.
