Gladys Kothenbeutel, the daughter of Frederick and Ada (Wenig) was born June 4, 1915, in rural Klemme, IA. She attended Klemme area rural schools and graduated from Klemme High School in 1932. Gladys who was of rural Kanawha at the time was united in marriage to Marvin F. Barz, on October 11, 1931 at the home of her parents, by the Reverend Calvin Grossheusch. The couple's union was blessed with a daughter Darlene.

Following their marriage the couple farmed and raised their daughter northeast of Klemme, IA, for many years. In addition to being a partner in the tasks of the farm, Gladys was a nurturing wife and loving mother. She was a meticulous home maker and a wonderful cook. She had made countless home made pies, especially apple with the apple being harvest from their orchard on the farm. Gladys loved to be in the outdoors working in her, large, colorful, and weed free flower gardens and maintaining a well manicured lawn. All who knew her enjoyed her proficiency in raising these beautiful gardens. She also found time to create dozens on handcrafted, one of a kind hand stitched quilts that she shared with many of her family members as keepsakes. Gladys and Marvin enjoyed dancing and when the occasion arose they would make a trek to a regional dance venue for an evening dancing and relaxation. She also enjoyed times spent with friends and hosting relatives at their farm throughout her life.

Gladys was preceded in death by Marvin on May 8, 1999. She had enjoyed traveling on occasion to Branson, MO, with her daughter Darlene and granddaughter Connie. Following her husband's passing she had resided for periods of time at the Klemme Apartments, Prairie View Senior Apartments in Garner, Belmond Rehabilitation Center and more recently had resided at Concord Care Center.

Those who knew her will reflect fondly upon her love and interest in others, her warm and friendly demeanor, and her positive outlook on everything in her life. She lived a full and active life and was sharp as a tack almost to the very last days of her Century Plus Journey.

He legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of her daughter Darlene Trenary, Belmond, IA; 2 grandchildren: Connie (Jim) Marciniak, Klemme, IA, and Marvin (Nancy) Trenary) Kanawha, IA; 1 older sister Emma Palmby, Garner, IA; 7 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren; as will as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin in 1999; son-in-law Richard Trenary; brother Harold Kothenbeutel; and a great great granddaughter Abbigale Marciniak.
