Joan E. Hrubes, 76, of Garner died Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 5th at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Fr. Dennis Miller, Msgr. John Hemann and Msgr. Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 P.M., Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with a combined Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Rosary Society rosary at 4 P.M. and a Scriptural wake service at 8 P.M. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Joan Elaine Hrubes, the daughter of Walter and Myrtle (Geisler) Lemke, was born November 23, 1937 at Hampton. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1955. On June 28, 1955 she married the love of her life, Clarence Hrubes, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. In their fifty-eight years of marriage they were blessed with six wonderful children, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Joan was a Girl Scout, Rainbow Girl, Cub Scout Den mother and Girl Scout leader. She and Clarence farmed south of Duncan until 1993. In September of 1997 they moved from the farm into Garner. Joys of her life included spending time with family and friends, quilting, couponing, writing to her pen pal, and making quilts for her family, Sister Carol in Colorado and the Shriner's Hospital in Minneapolis. She also enjoyed trips to casinos especially her most recent trip in January of 2013 to Las Vegas with Clarence and some of their grandchildren. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and member and past officer of St. Wenceslaus Rosary Society.
Joan is survived by her husband, Clarence, of Garner; five children, Gaylord (Marie) Hrubes of Urbana, Renee (Tom) Devine of Ames, Patti Hrubes and special friend, Marvin Alphs, of Mason City, Mike (Char) Hrubes of Britt and Suzette Hrubes and special friend, George Unruh, of Chandler, AZ; grandchildren, Megan (Stuart) Rawlins and son, Lucas of Smithfield, NC, Dana (Steven) Arenas and children, Elisa and Gemma of Bellevue, NE, Caleb (Chelsea) Hrubes of San Angelo, TX, Rachel (Jerod) Storck of Houston, TX, Christopher Devine and fiancée, Julie Hutson and her three sons, Jarod, Jonus and Jesse, Timothy (Susan) Devine and their two children, Kenzie and Madison of Cedar Falls, Lacey Hrubes and special friend, Jason Albers, of Garner and her two children, Amara and Coewhan, Joshua Hrubes and fiancée, Brittany McAtee, of Garner and Brandi Hrubes and special friend, Justin Engh, of Clear Lake; a brother, Earl (Kathi) Lemke of Des Moines; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Hrubes of Garner, Leona Hrubes of Britt and Mary Trca of Britt; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, J.J. and Rose Hrubes; and son, Terry, in 1979.
