Marie A. Michelson, 101, of Kanawha passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Graveside services for Marie Michelson will be held on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 11:30 AM at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Marie was born October 20, 1912 on the family farm near Williams, Iowa to Herman and Lena (Jagau) Eggers and was the 7th of 8 children. She attended schools in Alden, Thornton, and Mason City, Iowa. After high school, she worked in a clothing store in downtown Mason City. On March 13, 1934 she witnessed the John Dillinger Gang leaving the First National Bank after robbing it. She backed herself against the building walls to avoid gunfire.

She met Harold Michelson at the original Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake where they would go dancing every weekend. They were married September 28, 1940 in Mason City. They made their home in Britt, Iowa until Harold was drafted in 1942. In the service, he was stationed for a while in Mississippi and Marie worked as a cook at a local hotel. After his discharge in 1946, they moved back to Kanawha to the family farm. They had one son Bernard. Marie was an excellent cook, made many quilts by hand, loved sewing clothes, and liked to shop. She drove until she was in her early 90’s. Harold and Marie moved into Kanawha in July 1974 when Harold retired from farming completely. They enjoyed sitting on their front porch watching traffic go by. She continued to live in that house until her death.

Marie is survived by her son, Bernie Michelson; her grandchildren, Laurie (David) Vorland, Dean Michelson, Christy (Karl) Rinnels, Jason (Tina) Hanson, Kim (fiancé Cody Jacobson) Hanson, Travis Michelson, and Tina Michelson; great-grandchildren, Emily and Harley Vorland, Anthony, James, and Kyle Michelson, Jesse Hewitt, Conner Rinnels, Paige, Riley, and Keira Hanson, and Blake Jacobson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold; great-granddaughters, Amanda and Katie Vorland; sisters, Hilda, Mabel, and Leona; brothers, Harley, Clarence, Walter, and Rollin, and many nieces and nephews.
