Donald F. Nielson, 94, Belmond, died February 20, 2013 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Inurnment and a family graveside service will be held later at Amsterdam Township cemetery east of Goodell. Memorials may be made in Don’s name and sent to Dugger Funeral Home, Box 233, Belmond.
Donald, the son of Harold and Erma Felton Nielson, was born April 19, 1918 in Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1933 and then attended the University of Minnesota, earning a bachelors degree. During World War II Don served his country as a Classification Specialist and was stationed in Wyoming. After the war Don returned to Belmond where he would make his home. He worked as a bookkeeper, first in Fort Dodge and later with a family business in Osage. All the while, Don maintained his home in Belmond. Upon retirement he worked for a lumber company in Belmond.
Don lived at the Belmond Community Apartments for 20 years, and in the last years he resided at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Don belonged to the Belmond United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his life at the apartments and made many special friends both there and throughout Belmond over his lifetime. He very much enjoyed cooking, and would make cookies and candy to share with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, a brother, and a nephew. Donald is survived by nephews Tom McSweeney of Pickering, MO and John McSweeney of Cedar Falls; and great nieces Natasha Hegmann and Brenna McSweeney.
