July 20, 1895 --- August 1, 1957
John Swalve, 62, a native and former resident of the Klemme community, died at his home in Clear Lake, Iowa, early Thursday morning, August 1, 1957. He was born July 20, 1895, in Twin Lake Township near Klemme, Iowa, one of eight children born to his parents, Berend and Fanny (Fuls) Swalve. He grew up on the farm, completed his common school education in the rural school nearby, and attended religious instruction and became a member of the Klemme Reformed Church by confirmation. On December 23, 1918, John Swlave and Wilhelmina Sandersfeld were married at the John Sandersfeld farm home. They became the parents of two sons and one daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. Swalve were farmers and lived in the Klemme community through all their active years. In 1948 they moved to Clear Lake in retirement where John died while asleep in bed early on the morning of August 1, 1957. Even though Mr. and Mrs. John Swalve lived in Clear Lake, they continued to hold membership and attend services at the Klemme Reformed church. They both had been baptized and confirmed here, and their three children had been baptized here. As a young man, John sang in the church choir and in his active years held various offices in the church, including a term as Deacon. Hence, it is fitting that we bring his remains back to the home church for last rites and burial in the Klemme Cemetery.
Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his passing: two children, Mrs. Wilma Odegaard and his son Raymond; two daughters-in-law, Lorraine and Lois Swalve; three grandchildren, Douglas and Dennis Swalve, and Randall Odegaard; four sisters, Tina (Mrs. Henry Behrens, Clarksville, Iowa; Fannie (Mrs. Clar Schupeltz, Wessington Springs, South Dakota; Clara (Mrs. Clyde Marshall), Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Lena (Mrs. Ingrid Lauritzen), Los Angeles, California; and one brother, Ben, of Compton, California. Preceding him in death were one son, Harold; one brother, Dirk, and one sister, Katie (Mrs. Herman Priebe).
