Benjamin Emil Krebs was born on July 23, 1919, at Two Harbors, Minnesota to Emil and Augusta Wellhausen Krebs. He graduated from the Lake Park, Iowa High School. After his schooling, Ben worked at the Northrup Aircraft Company in Los Angeles, California for four years. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. After his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Ben returned to Iowa. He was united in marriage to Norma Jean McCutcheon on June 22, 1947, at Goldfield, Iowa. The couple farmed in Lake Park for two years, farmed in Goldfield for two years and then moved to a farm near Corwith, Iowa, where they farmed until 1989. Ben and Norma retired in 1989 and moved into Corwith.
Ben was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Corwith, where he had served as Trustee, farm manager and head usher. He also belonged to the Elmer Wilson American Legion Post #229 in Corwith. Ben really enjoyed farming and when he moved to town, this farming love turned into his love of gardening.
Ben died on Monday, January 5, 2009, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa. He was 89. Surviving are his wife, Norma of Corwith and his children, Joyce Norton and husband, Steve, Ankeny, Iowa, Barry Krebs and wife, Nancy, Denver, Colorado, Keith Krebs, Grapevine, Texas and Martin Krebs and wife, Pamela, St. Louis, Missouri. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Birney and Donald Krebs. Memorials made be given to the Corwith United Methodist Church for the Mission Fund or to Hospice of North Iowa.
