Corwith, IA 50430Helen Mae Dean was born on January 15, 1914, at Corwith, Iowa, to Alvin and Addie Stokesbury Graham. She received her education at the Corwith School. After her schooling, Helen worked as a “choregirl” for a family south of Britt, Iowa. Helen was married to Donald James Dean on February 28, 1933, at Klemme, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed for a time on a farm on the south edge of Corwith. In 1941, they moved to a farm 5 ˝ miles south of Corwith, where they farmed until their retirement in 1974. Helen and Donald then moved into Corwith. Helen was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Corwith, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, was a member of the U.M.W. and had held various district offices, was a former director of the Junior Choir and was active in the various Women’s Circles. In her younger years on the farm, Helen was active in 4H and was a leader of the Boone-Magor 4H Club for many years. She was a member of the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs, where she held county and district offices, was a Charter Member of the Iowana Women’s Club in Corwith and later joined the Corwith Women’s Club, where she was active until her death. She enjoyed reading and craftwork. For twelve years, Helen and Donald spent their winters in Arizona until 1991.
Helen died on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. She was 93. Helen is survived by her daughter, Judith Johnson and husband, Neil, Gold Canyon, Arizona. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Lance Johnson and wife, Lynn, Lakewood, Colorado, Kent Johnson, Gold Canyon, Arizona, Audra Johnson, Los Angeles, California and 4 great grandchildren, Greg, Kyle and Brett Johnson and Aidan Johnson Flynn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald on November 28, 1995, her son, Donald Lee, three brothers, Vernell, Wayne and Harold Graham and an infant sister.
