FOREST CITY, IA — McKayla Joy Aukes, 9, of Forest City, died Monday (May 21, 2007) of complications due to a heart defect. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Lois Abel officiating. Burial will be in the Klemme Cemetery in Klemme. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark in Forest City, and an hour prior to the service at the church.

McKayla Joy Aukes was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Oct. 8, 1997, the daughter of Mark and Ranae (Lange) Aukes. She was baptized in the Methodist faith and was attending the third grade at Forest City Elementary School. McKayla was a kind-hearted young girl who loved her family and lived her brief time here to the fullest. There were so many things she enjoyed doing: spending time with Grandma Betty in Klemme and playing with her cats and pet rabbit, Blackie; sleep-overs with her friends; taking the whole family out to the movies; spending time with her cousins and riding horses. She liked hearing stories about when she was “little” and always wanted to hear stories from when mom and dad were “little.” She loved all the trips for summer school and was active in Junior Theater in the summertime. In 2006, she was chosen “Little Miss Puckerbrush” and got to ride in the parade. A family trip to Hawaii in January 2006 was a dream come true for McKayla. She got to see the ocean and go snorkeling, took a helicopter ride around the islands, enjoyed a deep-sea submarine trip, did some horseback riding and splashed in the surf at Waikiki Beach. She attended a Hawaiian luau and was delighted with all the flowers and dancing.

McKayla is survived by her parents, Mark and Ranae Aukes, of Forest City; her sister, Kelley Aukes; and nephew, Aiden, of Waverly; grandmother, Betty Lange, of Garner; “grandma and grandpa” Marvin and Genevieve Dearing of Buffalo Center; uncles, Bert (Barb) Lange, Harlen (Sarah) Aukes, Dennis (Sandy) Aukes, and Larry (Debbie) Aukes; aunts, LeAnn Lange and Jeannie (Brad) Grotewold; and many cousins and friends. McKayla was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Larry Lange; paternal grandparents, Merle Aukes and Inez “Joy” Aukes; and a great-uncle, Roy Aukes. Petersen Lund Funeral Home
