GARNER, IA - Fernon Griggs, 96, died Sunday (March 28, 1999) at Concord Care Center in Garner. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Fernon Floyd Griggs was born July 15, 1902, near Goodell in Avery Township. He farmed with his father on the family farm for several years. On Dec. 27, 1938, he married Dalia Stromer at the Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage in Klemme. To this union two children were born, Jay and Jane. In 1939 they purchased a farm east of Miller where he farmed and continued to reside through retirement years. In May of 1994, he became a resident of Concord Care Center in Garner. He was member of Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church, served as an Ellington Township rural school director and also as a township trustee. He was a director of the Miller Telephone Company for many years. Fernon was a member of the Garner and Forest City Saddle Clubs and will always be remembered for his love of horses. Over the years he worked at the Garner and Forest City sale barns on sale days. It was there he became acquainted with many people and enjoyed visiting with them. In later years his grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been a source of pleasure and joy.

Survivors include his wife, Dalia Griggs of Garner; his daughter, Jane Davison and her husband, Willis, of Garner; his daughter-in-law, Janan Griggs of Garner; six grandchildren, Jolene Griggs of Garner, Jennifer Kruse and her husband, Jeff, of Pella, Wendell Davison and his wife, Brenda, of Garner, Susan Reising and her husband, Jeffery, of Wilcox, Ariz., Sara Gormley and her husband, John, of Edgewood, N.M., and Julia Davison of Ames; nine great-grandchildren, Andrew, Collin and Ryan Davison, Leah, Luke and Taylor Reising, Jason, Christopher and Katherine Gormley; a sister, Nellie Burk and her husband, Gerald, of Klemme; sisters-in-law, Virgle Griggs of Des Moines and Hallie Stromer of Rapid City, S. D.; several nieces and nephews; and a foster son, Ronald Wood and his wife, Peggy, of Fort Dodge.
