Anna Florence Hansen Glawe was born November 17, 1909, to Hans Marius and Anna Katherine Eleanora Hansen on a homestead near Wiggins, Colorado, In 1922, the family returned to Wesley, Iowa, where her father’s parents had settled after immigrating from Denmark. Florence graduated from Wesley High School, as valedictorian, in 1927. After attending a course of study in business and piano at Upper Iowa University, she returned to Wesley to work in the Exchange Bank until 1935.
In June, 1935, Florence married Elmer Glawe of Corwith, Iowa at the Wesley United Methodist Church. The couple built a home on their farm west of Corwith, where they spent their lives, until Florence moved into the Kanawha Community Nursing Home in May, 2004. Florence began studying piano at an early age. She always enjoyed music and, starting in her teens, was a church organist and pianist for over 50 years at the Wesley and Corwith United Methodist Churches. It was her honor to play for many weddings, funerals and special events. Florence enjoyed oil painting, needlework, crafts and family history. She instilled her love of music and crafts in her children and grandchildren. She and Elmer spent innumerable hours playing cards and dominoes with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They also enjoyed traveling by camper or trailer to many places and wintered in Weslaco, Texas for more than 30 years. Florence was originally a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and became a member of the Corwith United Methodist Church after she was married. For many years, she taught and attended Sunday School, in addition to playing the piano and organ. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and held many offices over the years.
