KANAWHA, Iowa — Arthur M. Omvig, 80, of Kanawha, passed away Monday (April 12, 2004) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Funeral service for Art Omvig will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha, with military graveside services provided by the Kanawha American Legion Severson Post #77. Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Art, the son of Abel and Mary Fosen Omvig, was born July 23, 1923, east of Denhart. The youngest of nine children, he attended rural schools near Kanawha. In March of 1943, Art enlisted in the United States Army. He was a machine gunner in General Patton's Third Army, which landed in Europe on April 18, 1944, and left on Sept. 28, 1945. Art was the recipient of a Bronze Battle Star. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked for various farmers in the Kanawha area. On Jan. 3, 1946, Art was united in marriage with Marjorie Carlson in Kanawha. To this union two daughters, Diane and Linda, were born. Art went to work for G.I. Larson in 1947, the couple lived on the same farm for 40 years. They moved into Kanawha in 1987 and retired from farming in 1992. Art also owned and operated Art's Rec in Kanawha from 1971 until 1978. Art's children and grandchildren were very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them.

Art is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Kanawha; daughter, Diane and her husband, Jerry Ebersviller, of Arlington, Minn., their children and grandchildren, Becky and Tim Luskey, Emma and Luke and Lori and Clint Hatlestad and Taylor; daughter, Linda and her husband, Robert Zeigler, of Kanawha, and their children and grandchildren, Melanie and Terry Lottie, Suzie and Sydney, Joel and Sarah Zeigler, Joshua and Shelby, and Pamela and Thomas Holden, Zachary and Cole; three sisters, Oviedia and her husband, Ernest Michelson, of Kanawha, Celia Roskamp of Kanawha and Mabel Peterson of Britt. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe, Oren and John and his wife, Phyllis, two sisters, Alice Asche and Synneva and her husband, Bernard Abbas; and two brothers-in-law, Carl Roskamp and Linsworth Peterson.
