Elsie Lang was born on November 23, 1913, at Menno, South Dakota, to Nickolas and Susie Wipft Schaeffer. She was baptized on May 10, 1914, at the Saron Reformed Church in Menno and confirmed on June 24, 1928, at the Salem Reformed Church in Menno. She received her education at Menno. After her schooling, Elsie helped her parents on the family farm. She was married to Gottlieb Lang on November 26, 1931, at the Saron Reformed Church in Menno. The couple lived and farmed near towns in South Dakota, including Wolf Creek, Utica, Gayville and Scotland. They moved to Minnesota, where they lived in Balgrade, Ogalvie and Wadena. Elsie enjoyed helping her husband on the farm and raising animals. In 1969, Gottlieb and Elsie moved to the Kanawha, Iowa area and farmed for a time and then moved into Corwith in 1971 and retired. Elsie was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, where she also belonged to the ALCW and the Ladies Circle. She was Past President of the Corwith Sr. Citizens and had belonged to the Kanawha Sr. Citizens. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, camping, fishing and visiting with her many friends and relatives.

Elsie became a resident of the Kanawha Community Home at Kanawha, Iowa on October 7, 1999. She died there on Thursday, April 26, 2007, at the age of 93. Surviving are her children, Berniece Petrie and husband, Blaine, Long Prairie, Minnesota, Eleanor Halter and husband, Russ, Peoria, Arizona, John Lang and wife, Ruth, Britt, Iowa, Larry Lang and wife, Karen, Rockwell, Iowa and Allen Lang and wife, Chris, Kanawha, Iowa. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Alvin Schaeffer, and two sisters, Ruth Schancke and husband, Terry and Edna Fargo, all of Yankton, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant great grandson, 3 brothers, Helmuth, Rueben and Herbert and 3 sisters, Nettie, Hilda and Agnes.
