YOUNG MOTHER DIES AT WESLEY
FOUR LITTLE CHILDREN LEFT MOTHERLESS. BABY GIRL ONLY FIVE WEEKS OLD
PNEUMONIA WAS CAUSE OF MRS. VANHOORN'S DEATH. FUNERAL WAS HELD SATURDAY
Wesley, May 18 -The many friends and relatives of Mrs. Richard VanHoorn were saddened when it became known that she passed away at her home near Wesley, Iowa, after a brief illness with pneumonia. Mrs. Richard VanHoorn, nee Grace Luppen, was born in the vicinity of Kanawha, Iowa, on February 5, 1898. In the year 1916 she made public confession of faith and became a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed church. The same year she was united in marriage to Mr. Peter Smidt, which union was blessed with three children, George, Della and Peter. After the death of her husband she made her home with her parents residing three miles north of Kanawha. On November 5, 1929 she was again united in marriage to Mr. Richard VanHoorn and they then made their home on the VanHoorn home farm six miles northeast of Wesley. Since her husband was a member of the Ostfriesland Chr. Ref. church near Woden she had her membership transferred to this church and here remained a faithful member until her untimely death. For a while their cup of happiness overflowed. A daughter was born unto them which increased the joy of their home life. In the midst of the many blessings they were thankful to the Lord for His good providence. But sorrow was soon to becloud their life. A few weeks after their child was born Mrs. VanHoorn became ill with a cold which later developed into pneumonia and proved fatal. She was taken out of the midst of her happy family on May 13, 1931, at the age of 33 years, 3 months, and 8 days. Mrs. Van Hoorn was loved and esteemed by all who knew her. She was a loving wife and a kind and affectionate mother. As her sickness progressed she seemed to be aware of the approaching end and arranged for her departure. She spoke of her trust in her Savior; of her willingness to leave this world and to go home to be with God, and expressed her longing for the eternal reunion above. Her departure is mourned by her grief stricken husband and 4 children; George, Della, Peter and Grace; her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Peter Luppen, 3 brothers; Edd, Peter and Will; 4 sisters: Mrs. Ocko DeBoer of Adrian, Minn., Mrs. Harm Veer, Jennie and Anna and many relatives and a host of friends. Two brothers and one sister while in infancy preceded her in death. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Ostfriesland Christian Reformed Church under the direction of her pastor, Rev. D. Meyer and Rev. D.H. Plescher of Kanawha, her former pastor. Interment was made in the church cemetary.
