KANAWHA - Orville J. Hoveland, 77, of Kanawha, passed away Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at the Kanawha Community Home following a lengthy illness of respiratory problems and finally cancer. Funeral services for Orville Hoveland will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.
Orville, the son of George and Sadie Ellingston Hoveland, was born Dec. 17, 1923, in rural Kanawha, the youngest of four boys. Orville was united in marriage with Helen Jensen on Jan. 14, 1945, in Renwick. The couple lived most of their marriage in the Kanawha area where Orville was engaged in farming. Orville and Helen retired from farming in 1986, and built their home in Kanawha. Besides farming, Orville enjoyed working with wood and prior to his illness did some carpentry in Kanawha. He loved his workshop and spent many hours making crafts and furniture for family and friends. Orville loved his family and always did what he could to make them happy. The last few years were difficult, much of his time was spent confined to his home, but he still kept his sense of humor. Orville was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church where at one time he served as a trustee. He also served on the board of the Kanawha Community Home. We are sorry to part with him, but his quality of life was such that we are glad he is resting in peace at last.
Orville is survived by his wife Helen; three sons and one daughter, Robert and his wife, Linda, of Miller, Gary and his wife, Jean, of Kanawha, Dwight and his wife, Jacque, of Kanawha, and Jeannie Cornelius and her husband, Steve, of Topeka, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Angie Knowles and her husband, Doug, of Gilman, Rodney Hoveland and his wife, Jennifer, of Marshalltown, Nikkie Hoveland, of Baltimore, Md., Jim Hoveland and his wife, Michelle, of Kanawha, Jacob Hoveland, of Kanawha, Jennifer Cornelius, of Lawrence, Kan., Tracy Cornelius, of Topeka, Kan. and Brian Cornelius, of Topeka, Kan.; seven step-grandchildren, Justin Terwilliger, of Hastings, Minn., Tiffany, Ashley, and Kirsten Kitley, of Kanawha, Jessica Amant, of Dwight, Ill., Alicia and Dakota Daniels, of Kanawha; seven great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Jacob and Jordan Knowles, of Gilman, Ethan, Mason and Katilyn Hoveland, of Marshalltown, and Mya Hoveland, of Kanawha; and two step-great grandchildren, Nate and Justin Knowles, of Iowa City.
