MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. - Irene A. Benson, 93, of Mountain Home, Ark., formerly of Kanawha, passed away Monday (March 5, 2001) at the Auburn Hills Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. William H. Breen, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Irene, the daughter of Bert and Alma Erickson Larson, was born Jan. 25, 1908, in Kanawha. She attended rural school near Kanawha and Eagle Grove High School. Irene taught country school before she was married. On Feb. 22, 1930, she was united in marriage with Harvey Benson. The couple made their home and farmed 11/2 miles east of Kanawha. Following Harvey's retirement in 1972, the couple divided their time between Kanawha and Mountain Home, Ark. Irene was a member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church Women and birthday clubs. She enjoyed doing needlework, crocheting, embroidering, and knitting.

Irene is survived by one daughter, Patricia Melson, of Mountain Home, Ark.; two grandchildren, Beverly and her husband, Jonny Doyle, of Pineville, N.C., and A. G. Melson Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Muriel Cooper and her husband, William, of Clear Lake, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harvey, in 1994.
