KANAWHA: Harold Lee Assink, 84, of Kanawha, died Sunday (Nov. 28, 2004) at the Kanawha Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha with Pastor Steve Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 118 E. Second St. in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.

Harold Lee Assink, 84, of Kanawha, passed away, November 28, 2004 at Kanawha Care Center. Harold, son of Ed and Hilda Eekhoff Assink was born February 15, 1920 on a farm northwest of Kanawha, Iowa. He was taught in the rural schools, graduating from Kanawha High School in 1938. He was united in marriage to Nettie Christians on November 17, 1942, in Wright County. During World War II he took training in defense work in Omaha, Nebraska and worked at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, New York. After two years of trucking he became manager of the Farmers Produce in Kanawha. After 20 years there he worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa for 20 years. He and his family lived in Kanawha all of his married life.

Harold was a life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha, having served on the council as a deacon and an elder. He also taught Sunday school and was a member of the Men’s Society. Harold also served on the Kanawha Christian School Board. Harold enjoyed his family and his hobby of woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Nettie and five daughters: Arlys and husband Russell Straayer of Champaign, Illinois, Karen and husband Gilbert Asbe of Williamsburg, Iowa, Avis and husband Jay Kaemingk of Bellingham, Washington, Carmen and husband Garry Settles of Visalia, California, and Christie and her husband Allen Lang of Kanawha, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Valerie and husband Chris Goldsmith, Nathaniel and wife Jennifer Straayer, Douglas Asbe, Angela and husband Jeff Holmes, Michelle and husband Greg Knack, Ryan Kaemingk, Alycia Settles, Chad and wife Sara Lang, Nicole and husband Brent Renner, Ben Lang, and Kevin Lang; nine great-grandchildren: Reagan Straayer, Tyler Asbe, Breanna Asbe, Sage Holmes, Conner Knack, Taya Knack, Calvin Lang, and Caleb and Braden Renner; one sister Ruth Veldhouse of Denver, Colorado; one brother Paul and wife Dorothy Assink of Palos Heights, Illinois; one sister-in-law Ada Assink of Kanawha. He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Hilda Assink; one brother Henry Assink and one brother-in-law Heiko Veldhouse.
