KANAWHA - Alice C. Abbas, 91, of Kanawha, died Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006) at USA Healthcare Center in Clarion. Funeral services for Alice Abbas will be held 10:30 a.m. today at Kanawha Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Steve Schulz officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church today.

Alice was born Oct. 13, 1914, at the Thompson family farm, four miles south of Kanawha. She was the daughter of Abe M. Thompson and Cora (Nelson) Thompson. She married George D. Abbas on March 15, 1939. He died on July 28, 1989. Alice and George were members of Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. After graduation from Kanawha High School, Mrs. Abbas attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and taught in the Norway Township Rural Schools for three years. She then attended Lutheran Deaconess Hospital (now Lutheran Hospital) Chicago, Ill., and graduated in 1938 with an RN degree. After her marriage to George, she returned to teaching and taught the children she so cared about for a total of 26 years. She graduated from Drake University College of Education in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1970. Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed and cherished her faith, family and friends. Life-long learning, reading, poetry, word puzzles, painting and woodcarving were among her many interests. She accepted all people and lived her life on the "sunny side of the street."

Alice is survived by three sons, David (Lois-deceased) of Kanawha, Robert of Cedar Falls and Thomas (Rebecca) of Waterloo; two brothers and two sisters, Thomas Thompson (Elsa) of Ames, Abe Thompson (Lois-deceased) of Las Vegas, Nev., Jan Nichelson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Ruth Popp (Steve) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant sister, Esther; and sister, Inez (Marlin) Scherzinger of Fort Worth, Texas.

Memorials may be directed to David Abbas, 229 W. Second St., Kanawha, IA 50447. These gifts will be donated to the Kanawha Library, Kanawha Public School Elementary Library and the Kanawha EMTs. Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Britt.
