DEATH'S TOLL.
J. R. Lockwood.
Last Saturday marked the passing of an old time and respected resident of Clarion, J. R. Lockwood Seven years ago Mr. Lockwood suffered an attack of locomotor ataxia. Since that time he has been more or less of an invalid, and unable to participate in the active affairs of life, though he always retained his interest in business, politics and the topics of the day
He was down town for the last time on Oct 22, 1912. He went to the polls in a wheeled chair on election day. The funeral was held at the family home Monday afternoon at o'clock, and was largely attended by neighbors and old friends. The services were in charge of Rev. Nathan Gist of the Congregational church. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.

James Ross Lockwood was born in Marysville, Union county, Iowa. Dec. 20, 1835, and was thus a little past 77 years of age at the time of his death. He removed to Ogle county, Illinois, when fifteen years old, but returned to Iowa in the spring of 1854. Mr. Lockwood saw honorable service in the war of the rebellion. He enlisted from Marshall county with the Third lowa Infantry volunteers, first as a musician for three months, then three years as a private. This regiment participated in many important engagements, and made a splendid record for valor and endurance. In the great battle of Shiloh the third Iowa saw heroic service, losing 187 men (in killed, wounded and miss ing) out of a total of 560 engaged. In fact the regiment became so decimated before the close of the war that the remnant was consolidated with another commend.
In 1865, Sept 22, the subject of our sketch was united in marriage to Catherine V Doyle at Story City, Iowa. Three children were born to them Emmett, who died in infancy, Edwin R. and Minnic. The two latter with the devoted wife, survive him
The family came to Clarion in April, 1882 Previously Mr. Lockwood had been engaged in the grocery business, but on coming here he entered a partnership in hardware, the firm name being Lockwood & Paige. This was later dissolved, and eventually Mr. Lockwood took his son into the& business, which is now successfully continued by the latter

For many years J. R. Lockwood was an active and influential figure t in the affairs of our little city. He was essentially not a straw man,
but a person of positive convictions and principles, dominated always by a keen sense of right and wrong An upright and public spirited man. he was a valuable citizen in the formative days of Clarion's history He was a also a kind and indulgent husbands and father, and a true friend His was a long, useful and eventful life, and his memory will be kindly h cherished by many warm friends.
