Samuel C. Russell.
On Tuesday evening last, at the home of his son, J. W. Russell, occurred the death of Samuel C. Russell, after an illness of several months duration. Death was due to heart trouble and the infirmities of old age. Although a man past 84 years of age, Mr. Russell enjoyed good health until his last sickness.
"Uncle" Samuel Russell, as he was familiarly called, was a man universally liked and respected by all who knew him. He possessed to a remarkable degree a kind and sympathetic nature, and always greeted his friends with a word of cheer and a smiling countenance. He was a man of strict Integrity and sobriety, and of whom no one could say aught but good. The later years of his life were full of happiness and contentment-he was at peace with his God and all the world.
Samuel Cave Russell was born of English parents at Saint John, New Brunswick, Aug. 4, 1823. His is early life was spent at the trade of a stairbuilder. On attaining his majority he went to Boston, Mass., where he resided for eight years. During the gold excitement he drifted west to California, where he engaged in mining for a number of years. He later returned to Will county, Illinois, locating near Joliet, where he remained for thirty years. On November 25, 1846, Mr. Russell was united in marriage with Miss Susan Wood Avery at Newton, Mass. To this union were born five children, the oldest of whom, Those Emily A., died in infancy. surviving are: S. A. of Linden, Iowa, Mrs. Chas. Andrew of Joliet, Ill., J. W. of Clarion and Mrs. J. H. Braden of Spokane, Wash., all of whom were present at the last sad rites. The wife and mother was called to.the home beyond seventeen years ago. In 1885 Mr. Russell moved his family to Wright county, locating on a farm two miles west of Clarion. About four years ago he came to town and had since made his home with his son, J. SW. Russell. The deceased was a lifelong christian, having identified himself with the Freewill Baptist church at an early age, with which denomination he continued his membership until coming to this county, when be united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Clarion and remained faithful and consistent member ever afterward.
