Death of Father Clarke. Mr. G. II. Clarke, father of Mrs. D. W. Stewart of this city passed away last Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. R. Wheeler at Glenwood, Wis. Mr. Clarke had been in poor health for some time, and his final sickness was a general breaking up of life's forces on account of old age. Mrs. Stewart was summoned when his condition became serious, and was at his bedside when the end came. Mr. Clarke was a familiar figure on our streets as he has made his home with his daughter the greater part of the time for some years past. He was a very pleasant old gentleman, and in his prime had been quite an active and successful man, being engaged in the real estate and insurance business. Of eight children the two daughters mentioned are all who survive him. His faithful wife was spared to be a companion for an old age, her cheerful presence has done much to brighten his declining days. He had a pleasant home here, supplied with all the comforts of life, and has enjoyed several trips back to the old scenes in Wisconsin. Mr. Clarke was admitted to the Masonic fraternity forty-three years ago, and was a member of the lodge at Menasha, Wis., at the time of his death. frequently visited the lodge room here, and expressed a wish that in case he was buried in Clarion his brethren of the order should have charge of the services. This request was complied with. The remains were brought here Thursday morning, accompanied by the widow and two daughters. The funeral took place the same day at the Stewart home, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Mathis assisted in the ceremonies. There was a good attendance, though many were detained at home account of the rain which fell all day.

The deceased was born at Redding, Vermont, April 8, 1819,,and was thus aged about eighty-five years, bis death occurring a few days previous to the 3 anniversary of his birth. He was married in 1845 to Miss Betsy Robinson of Royalton. After their marriage they moved to Menasha, Wis., and later to Fon du Lac. In 1871 they came to Iowa, and have made their home in this county for the most part ever, since.
