William Sidney Root
January 24, 1893 --- March 19, 1904

Mrs. Cora Thompson received a telephone message Saturday, a. m., from Des Moines, stating that her nephew, Willie Root, was lying at the point of death. A telegram was received Sunday telling of his death. Mr. Root arrived Monday noon with the remains, and the funeral services and burial were held here. Mrs. Root was unable to come. The rainy day prevented the attendance of many from a distance.

Obituary
William Sidney Root, the second child of Sidney and Lillie Root, was born in Goldfield, January 24, 1893. He died near Des Moines, March 19, 1904, at 1 p. m., aged eleven years, one month and twenty-four days. Sickness the greater portion of his life finally resulted in heart weakness. He was patient during his last illness, only saying when suffering great pain, “Oh! mamma, I feel so bad.”; He often said “If I don’t get well, won’t you take me to Goldfield and put me beside baby Harley?” He was promised this and it was done.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 2 p. m., March 21, Rev. Sneath officiating, assisted by Rev. Findley. The text for the sermon was from the 7th chapter of Luke, verses 11 and part of 14. Kind hearts and tender hands, made the floral and other decorations appropriate and pretty, and manifested many other tokens of sympathy. The B. Y. P. U. of the Calvary Baptist church, of Des Moines, gave a beautiful tribute of cut flowers and the boys of his Sunday school class gave two exquisite floral offerings.

Friend after friend departs. Who hath not lost a friend?
But oh, these little white caskets containing the innocent loved ones of whom our Savior said:
“Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.”; How it wrenches our hearts to give them up. He alone can comfort.

The pallbearers were boys of cleanly lives who delicately and sympathetically performed their sad rites. They were: Henry Griffin, Paul MacEachron, Freeman Pinder and Archie Blewett. His parents, two sisters and numerous other relatives and friends lament his early death.
