July 21, 1936 ---- March 22, 2022

Harlan M. Patterson, 85, of West Union, died Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner. Interment with military rites will follow at Horton Cemetery, rural Horton. Visitation will precede the service at the funeral home on Saturday starting at 1:30 PM. Memorials may be made in Harlan’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Harlan Merle, son of Ted and Louise (Schott) Patterson was born July 21, 1936, in Wright County, Iowa. Harlan received his education in the Clarion Schools. He served in the United States Army from March 1955 until being honorably discharged in March of 1957. Harlan worked as an auto mechanic for much of his professional career in Ohio and Iowa. While in Ohio, he owned a full service gas station, specializing in working on Volkswagens. Harlan was united in marriage with Kathryn Pittman on July 21, 1985, in Shell Rock, Iowa. He enjoyed working on cars, gardening, fishing, and having fun.

A Father is neither an anchor to hold us back nor a sail to take us there, but always a guiding light whose love shows us the way.

Harlan is survived by his wife Kathryn of West Union; two daughters, Patricia (Ed) Downey of Appley Valley, Ohio and Melissa (Steve) DeNeut of Joliet, Illinois; stepson, Gary (Alysa) Behrens of Hudson; grandchildren, Matthew (Lauren) Downey, David Downey, Anna DeNeut, Mark DeNeut, Michael Ambrose, Joleen Ambrose, Jacob Ambrose, Joy Cherie Stoner, Shawna Behrens, and Brett Behrens; siblings, Dean Patterson of Seattle, Washington, Lee (Sally) Patterson of Clarksville, Jerry Patterson of Rockford, Illinois, John Patterson of Waterloo, and Joan (Gary) Frieling of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; and many great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Lynn Marie Ambrose; and siblings, Don Patterson, Clint Patterson and Mildred Patterson, who died in infancy.

Harlan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2012. Thank you to his love and partner, Kathy for the care she provided him while still at home. And to Gunderson Palmer Hospice Team and Strawberry Point Lutheran Home Memory Manor for their outstanding care, compassion and support to him and his family.
