July 8, 1896 ---- November 24, 1985

Earl F. Riley, 89, Holy Spirit Retirement Home, died Sunday in a Sioux City hospital after a short illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Cathedral of the Epiphany. Monsignor Louis H. Kollasch will officiate. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard at the services. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 9:30 p.m. today with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. by the parish and 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and a scripture service at 8 p.m. Dy the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in the Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Riley was born July 8, 1896, in Dubuque, Iowa, and moved to Sioux City in 1929. He began his career with the Union Electric Co. July 1, 1913. He continued to work with the company after it combined with Iowa Public Service, retiring in 1962. Mr. Rilev was a member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany, Epiphany Council 743, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and Garrigan Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1915 and served as Council treasurer, financial secretary and Grand Knight at Eagle Grove, Iowa, from 1920 to 1923. His Sioux City activities included membership chairman, Chancellor, Grand Knight and District Deputy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and served as an active host for the Sioux City USO Center during World War II. He was a longtime member of the American Legion.

Survivors include two daughters, Celeste Bubany of LaPuente, Calif., and Berneil Thornton of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Carl V. of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
