Rollin Eugene Lauer was born on December 24, 1930, the son of Irvin and Winnie Griffin Lauer in Union Township, Adair County, Iowa. He received his education in the Zion School System and graduated from Zion High School. He served two years in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Lamb on July 16, 1952, at Orient Methodist Church, Orient, Iowa. Following his marriage, he farmed the Afton and Waukee, Iowa areas. He was employed by the Kern Implement Company in Indianola from 1967 to 1969. They moved to Eagle Grove in 1969 and operated the Sandman Motel until selling their business in 1977. The couple divorced that same year. While still operating the motel, he began working for the Eagle Grove Co-op. He married Darlene King Reimers on September 1, 1979, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. They operated the Boondocks Motel in Williams, Iowa, for 8 years prior to their retirement in December of 1995.

Rollin Eugene Lauer died at the Hamilton County Public Hospital in Webster City, Iowa, on April 9, 1996, following a short illness. He had attained the age of 65 years, 3 months, and 15 days.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Lauer, Eagle Grove; sons. Randy Lauer and wife, Debbie, Des Moines, Iowa, Alan Lauer, Minneapolis, Minn., and John Lauer and wife, Jolene, Waukee, Iowa; one daughter, Penny Ackerson and husband, Steve, Eagle Grove; step-son, Michael Reimers and wife, Susan, Runnells, Iowa; four step-daughters, Kaylene Hudspeth and husband, Terry, Britt, Iowa, Cindy Huffaker, Peoria, Ariz., Robin Marvin and husband, Terry, St. Paull Minn., and Jennifer Lesher and husband, Jeff, Eagle Grove: 21 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren: brothers, Homer Lauer, Creston, Iowa, David Lauer, Prosser, Wash.; and sisters, Marilyn Fils and Phyllis Brown, both of Creston. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 13, 1996, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa, with the Reverend Omar Pettersen officiating the 1:30 p.m. service. Following cremation, burial will be at a later date. Willim Funeral Home, Ltd., Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
