Thomas E. Mathews
18 August 1843 --- 20 April 1908

Last week the mortal remains of Comrade T. E. Mathews were laid to rest in the Woolstock cemetery having been brought back from his late residence in Cedar Falls. Mr. Mathews used to reside in Troy and his memory will be cherished by all of his old neighbors as he was an exemplary citizen, a kind husband and father, and in his young manhood a good soldier for the Union. He was captured and confined for a time in the Hell hole of the Confederacy at Andersonville suffering all the cruelties that monster Henry Wirtz could invent to inflict on the unfortunate who were confined to that so called military prison.
Peace be unto his ashes.
