Edith Samantha Oleson Melaas
November 4, 1897 --- February 20, 1984

Edith S. (Oleson) Melaas, 86, widow of Ira J. Melaas, died in Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday, Feb. 20 of a heart ailment. Funeral services were held at the Central Lutheran Church and burial was in Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines on Feb. 25. Mrs. Melaas was born in the Evergreen Community near Goldfield and graduated from the Eagle Grove High School. She taught in the Colesburg and Hubbard schools. She attended A.I.B. school in Des Moines and served for several years as a secretary in the Iowa Department of Agriculture. She was a long-time member of the Central Lutheran Church.

Survivors include five sisters: Cora Allbaugh of Knoxville, Tenn.; Jeannette Hill of Tulsa, Okla.; Sylvia Larson of Minneapolis, Minn ; Myrtle Boyd of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Dorothy Ashpole of Clarion; three nieces: Darcia Christensen of Eagle Grove, Betty Lou Young of Clarion, and Judy Jurgensen of Princeton, Minn.; and four nephews: Jim Ashpole of Minneapolis, Kenley Ashpole of Marion, Ind., Robert Allbaugh of Greenbrae, Calif., and James W. Allbaugh of Westport, Conn. A brother, Loyd Olson of Goldfield, preceded her in death. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Helen Canine of Des Moines and three stepsons, Don Melaas of Stafford, Va., Bruce Melaas of Keller, Texas, and Ira J. Melaas, Jr. of Rock Island, Ill.
