Wright County's first major winter storm of the season ended in tragedy Sunday afternoon north of Goldfield.

The Wright County Sheriff's Department reported that Charles William Borel, 82, Goldfield, suffered a heart attack after getting his car stuck in a snowbank 1½ miles north of Goldfield on a county gravel road shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Reports from the Sheriff's office states that Borel tried to move his car before walking about ½ mile north trying to get to a nearby farm. A farmer found the body on the road approximately 100 yards from a farm building and notified the authorities.

Wright County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Whitters pronounced Borel dead at the scene.

Borel's death is the first weather related fatality in Wright County this year.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) for Charles William Borel, 81, of Goldfield who died Sunday. Rev. Carlton Shaw will officiate at the 1:30 p.m. service in Holmes Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. –Goldfield Chronicle.

Charles Wm. Borel was born October 20, 1905 at Galt, Iowa, the son of James and Mary Goslin Borel.

He was educated in a country school near Galt.

The family lived in the Galt, Dows area for a time. With the exception of a few years working as a government poultry inspector in Carroll, Iowa, he spent most of his life in the Holmes area and later moving to Goldfield to make his home.

He was a member of the Holmes Lutheran Church, Holmes, Iowa.

He died of an apparent heart attack while walking from his car which became stuck in the snow about a mile north of the Glenwood Cemetery on March 29. At the time of his death, he was 81 years, five months, and nine days of age.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Katherine, Annie, and Rose and two brothers, James and Fred. Charles never married, and is survived by seven nieces, nine nephews, and many great-nieces and many great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 1987, at the Holmes Lutheran Church, Holmes, Iowa, with Pastor Carlton Shaw officiating. Burial was in the Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield, Iowa.
