His father died when he was about four years old leaving his mother with ten children. In 1839 at the age of fourteen years he with his mother, brother and sisters came to Plainfield, Illinois. They moved to Pavilion, Illinois in 1845. then to Earlville, Illinois in 1857 and came to Goldfield, Iowa in 1886. He was united in marriage with Caroline Ives, November 17, 1850. Unto this union were born four children: one dying in infancy and the other three are I. J. Luce of Earlville, Illinois; Mrs. J. A. Radley, Valeria, Iowa and Mrs. F. C. Foote, Iowa Falls, Iowa. He joined the Baptist church at the age of 14 years and was a member 74 years. He was a member of the Goldfield church from the time it was organized.

Mr. Luce was a man honored and respected by every acquaintance, and in Goldfield he was known to practically everybody. His well mannered, gentlemanly appearance was strictly in keeping with the inner man, for a more honorable, upright person is seldom found.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Wednesday, December 17, Rev. J. G. Eaton of Eagle Grove, for years Mr. Luce's pastor, conducting the service. Rev. J. S. Nicholson assisted. A large congregation of friends were present to pay a last tribute to the departed. Interment took place at Glenwood Cemetery.
