Dolly Marian Hodge
1 August 1883 --- 11 July 1896

Death's stern hand fell heavily upon this city when it took from this earth to a brighter world, little Dolly Hodge, Saturday morning, at seven o'clock. She would have been thirteen years old at her next birthday in August. Dolly had always enjoyed the best of health, was the pride of her home and her kind and lovable disposition found for her a place in the hearts of all her playmates and acquaintances.

The first that was noticed of her not feeling her usual bright and happy self was a week ago Monday, when she was taken with a slight fever. She continued in this state throughout the week, with no apparent danger, until Saturday morning she commenced bleeding at the nose and in spite of the skill of three physicians, she rapidly grew worse. The news of her death was a great shock and the whole city sorrowed with the bereaved family.

The funeral was held from the Congregational church, Rev. Southwell reading the beautiful Episcopal services, of which church the father and mother of the loved one are members, and this fair flower, too fair for earth, was laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery Monday.

Kind and loving hands have done all in their power to ease the torn hearts that mourn the loss that can never be replaced, but only the hand of Him above that knoweth best can heal the rent that is caused by this first breaking of the family chain.

"Oh, death, where is thy sting—
Oh, grave, where is thy victory"
