Donald Edward Johnson
17 February 1922 ---- 27 December 1994

Donald E. Johnson was born on February 17, 1922 to Carl and Mabel Baker Johnson of Eagle Grove. He was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove, on June 13, 1937. He attended school in Eagle Grove. He entered the United States Army on November 12, 1942 at Camp Dodge. While serving with the 415th Infantry during World War II in England, Belgium, Germany, and France, he received the Purple Heart while engaged in combat in Germany. He also received the Presidential Citation and American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Victory Medal, with various other medals. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945 at Fort MacArthur, Calif. He returned to Eagle Grove and was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for many years.

He was married on March 16, 1946 to Helen Toresdahl at the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. He entered the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown about a year ago. He was taken to the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center on December 27, 1994, where he died at the age of 72 years, 10 months, 10 days.

He was a past member of the Eagle Grove American Legion Post #304 and the VFW #642.

He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Rapp and her husband, Dennis; step-daughter, Carolyn Moss;
three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren; brothers, Richard Johnson and wife Mildred, Roger
Johnson and wife Jeaneice, all of Eagle Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, David.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 31, 1994 at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with Reverend Lyle Peters officiating the 1 p.m. service. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove with Full Military Honors provided by the Eagle Grove American Legion and VFW. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
