Lana Vivian Engstrom, daughter of Otto and Vivian Engstrom was born at Corwith [Algona], Iowa, December 2nd, 1927 and passed to her eternal home on December 20 [30], 1956, at the age of 29 years. When Lana was three months old her family moved to Humboldt county. At the age of fourteen years Lana joined the Methodist church. When she was fifteen years, she became a member of the "Order for Rainbow Girls". Lana graduated from the Humboldt High School with the class of 1945. She enrolled at Iowa State College and took two years of homemaking. Being interested in physical education she transferred to Iowa State Teachers college and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education.

On March 4, 1950 she was united in marriage to Arthur J. Arends of Stanhope. Mr. Arends was coach in Otho before taking a job in Hanlontown where both young people taught for one year. Arthur was called into service of his country in 1952 and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Lana accompanied him and lived near Waynesville, Missouri. It was a Waynesville that their little girl, Vivian Ann, now three years old, was born to them. Upon release from the army, Arthur and Lana moved to Earlville where Arthur has been coaching. Lana also taught homemaking the first part of the school year of 1955-56. Illness came upon her in March. Everything was done that medicine and science could offer, but she succumbed on Dec. 30th.

She leaves to morn her loss — her husband Arthur Arends and daughter Vivian of Earlville: her parents Mr. and Mrs. Otto Engstrom of Humboldt: two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Dilly of Hampton and Mrs. Donald Dyvig of Humboldt.

Though her years were few, they were filled with activity and usefulness, her friends will long remember her quick smile and pleasant ways.
