William Schurmann Died At Big Sandy
William A. Schurmann, 84, died Thursday at the Big Sandy medical center. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Rhorer Methodist church in Big Sandy. Mr. Schurmann was born in Waverly, South Dakota, and came to Montana in 1911 to work for the Great Northern railway. He married Josie Lear in Great Falls that same year. His wife and infant son were later burned to death. He lived in Big Sandy for many years, but for a number of years was employed in Fort Benton at the Power garage as salesman and bookkeeper. At Big Sandy, he became first manager of the Rocky Mountain elevator and later managed the Co-op and Greely elevators there. At the time of his retirement in 1962, Mr. Schurmann was an accountant with Campbell & Lehfeldt at Big Sandy. He was on the Big Sandy city council for years and was elected mayor several times, also serving on the school board and held other civic posts.

Survivors include a brother, Walter J. Schurmann, South Shore, South Dakota, and nieces and nephews. His sister, Carrie Schurmann Allderdice, before her marriage was Chouteau county superintendent of schools from 1925 to 1933. She died in 1964.
