Dwight “Smiley” Dean Hoveland, age 68, of Kanawha passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at Mercy Hospital Critical Care Center.

Smiley was born in Belmond, IA on November 4, 1952. He was the son of Orville and Helen Hoveland and brother to Jeannie, Gary, and Bob. He graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School in 1971.

Smiley moved to Arizona around 1974 to pursue a career in carpentry. He worked for Del E Webb Construction Company, Pratt Construction, and had multiple side jobs around Sun City, AZ. He was promoted to foreman and received an award for outstanding carpentry in 1987. Smiley married Joan Mathieu in 1980 and they lived together in Phoenix, AZ with her daughter, Mary Ellen. They were married for 14 years before their divorce.

Later in life he moved to Black Canyon City, AZ where he met his second wife, Jacque Daniels. Smiley and Jacque lived together with her three kids Jessica, Alicia, and Dakota. In 2000, they welcomed Smiley’s first and only child, Jacob James Hoveland. Following Jacob’s birth they all moved to Kanawha, IA to be closer to family.

After moving back, Smiley first worked as a construction carpenter before he began working for the North Central Co-op as a mechanic in 2003. He enjoyed his job as a mechanic because of his love for working on cars. Eventually Hanson and Sons Auto Repair bought the Co-op shop, and Smiley continued to work there until he retired in 2018.

In his free time you would find him at the races, camping, fishing, playing cards, boating, or working on vehicles and motorcycles. His first bike was a 1973 Harley Davidson Sportster which he kept his whole life. Smiley often took trips to South Dakota for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. He went to the rally for over 30 years. Throughout his life he also enjoyed all kinds of racing, but said multiple times his favorite was sprint car races.

Smiley will be remembered by being the best father anyone could ask for and always making time for his family, as well as being the most hardworking person in any job he had. He was befriended and loved by many because of how great he was to be around and how much he truly cared for other people.

Smiley is survived by son, Jacob Hoveland; mother, Helen Hoveland; brother, Bob Hoveland; sister, Jeannie Cornelius. Also by his stepdaughters and many nieces and nephews. Smiley was preceded in death by his father, Orville Hoveland, and brother, Gary Hoveland.
