Lewis Sampson

The unexpected death of Lewis Sampson of Thor, on the early morning of Thanksgiving Day came as a shock to his man relatives and friends. While he had not been in robust health in recent years, he had been about most of the time making his daily visits to the post office, walking to church on Sundays and driving out occasionally to surrounding points.

Death came as a result of a stroke on the night previous from which he never regained consciousness. He had reached the mature age of 78 years, 8 months and 13 days.

The deceased was born in Lee county, IL, March 13, 1864, his parents being Swen and Anna Sampson. The family early moved to Iowa. On October 2, 1887, Mr. Sampson married Lena Hanson of Thor and lived happily with her until his death, a period of about 55 years. To the union, were born five children, one of whom, Clara, died in infancy. The four living children are Steve Sampson of Eagle Grove, Anna Sampson Larson of Kearney, NE, and Clarence Sampson of San Diego, CA. There are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother survives, Swen Sampson of Highmore, South Dakota.

Mr. Sampson had followed farming as a life work. More than twenty years, he lived on his farm near Goldfield and for more than thirty years, he lived on his farm east of Thor. About five years ago, he retired from active farming and moved to Eagle Grove. About a year ago, he moved to Thor, where he resided until his death. The deceased was an active member of the Lutheran Church. He was baptized in infancy at Lee, Illinois, and was confirmed as a young man at Radcliffe, IA. While residing near Goldfield, he was a member of the Lake Lutheran congregation and was active in erecting the Lake Lutheran church, now in use. While living near Thor, he became an active member of the Norway Lake Lutheran church, which eventually merged with the Thor Lutheran church. While in Eagle Grove, he was affiliated with the East Side Lutheran Church. He was faithful in attendance at the worship and communion, and always gave generously to the work of the church.

The funeral was held at the Thor Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon, the local pastor, T. B. Thorson, officiating, assisted by the Rev. T. J. Severtson of Eagle Grove. Singing was furnished by Mrs. Andrew Oppedahl of Goldfield and Inez Moklebust of Thor. Many flowers were in evidence, and a large number of “In Memorium” gifts were made to the various benevolences of the church. Burial was made in the Norway Lake Cemetery, only a short distance from the old Sampson farm home.

Visitors from a distance who attended the funeral were: Clarence Sampson of San Diego, CA; Stephen Sampson of Highmore, SD; Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Larson of Kearney, NE; Mrs. Nellie Norton of Fort Wayne, IN; Mrs. Rob Hamilton of Waterloo, IA; Mrs. Newton Hanson and daughter of Big Lake, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Swen Bly and daughters of Hills, MN; Selma Bly of Lincoln, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Johnson and daughters; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sampson, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Eide, Mrs. Esther Tuttle and son, Mr. and Mrs. Will Robinson and daughter of Hampton, IA; Mr. and Mrs. K.
