CLARE (HANER) SMITH
Clare Jeane Smith, the daughter of C. Lyle and Rachel Gardner Haner, was born on Dec. 27, 1930 at Conesville, N.Y. She grew up in a family home and attended school in Gilboa, N.Y. She was united in marriage with Gilbert H. Smith on Nov. 18, 1949 at Manorkill, N.Y. The couple lived in New York a few months and then moved to Iowa in 1951. For several years, the family lived on the present Smith farm east of Eagle Grove. The family has lived in Eagle Grove for the past six years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Rotary Ann Auxiliary and the KYN Neighborhood Club.

She died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 20, 1984, at the family home on West Broadway in Eagle Grove, after an illness of several months. She attained the age of 53 years, 10 months and 23 days.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert H. Smith; her daughter, Carol Smith, three sons, Tim, Daniel, and John Smith, all of Eagle Grove; two sisters, Mary Ellen, Mrs. Alton Scutt of Conesville, N.Y.; Dorothy Kirk of Cairo, N.Y. and a brother, Stanley Haner, Portlandville, N.Y., and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tim.

Funeral services for Mrs. Clare J. Smith, age 53 of Eagle Grove, were held on Friday, Nov. 23, 1984 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Scott C Hall, church pastor officiated and burial was in the family lot at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held on Thursday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
