Lester Cannon

Lester Milton Cannon, the son of William and Anne Savage Cannon, was born on March 6, 1897 at Loogootee, Indiana. He grew up and received his early education in Indiana. At the age of 15 years, he came to Iowa and settled in the Eagle Grove area and was employed as a farm hand. During World War I, he joined the United States Army and served in France for several months.

On May 21, 1919, he was united in marriage with Inga Marie Anderson at Eagle Grove. After their marriage the family lived in Eagle Grove and Mr. Cannon was employed on various farms, then worked for the Iowa Public Service Company and then Chicago Northwestern Railroad and for 43 years, he was employed by the United States Postal Service and was a rural mail carrier for many years. Mrs. Cannon died on May 31, 1979. Lester was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove; a life member of the American Legion; a member of the Masonic Bower Lodge and White Shrine of Jerusalem and was a member of the Retired Persons of America.

He died at the Rotary Ann Retirement Home in Eagle Grove on Thursday afternoon, May 19, 1983, at the age of 86 years, two months and 13 days. He is survived by one daughter, Dolores, Mrs. James Maher of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc.; two sons: Donald Cannon of Los Angeles, Calif, and Roger Cannon of Minnetonka, Minn.; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Richard, four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services for Lester M. Cannon were held on Monday, May 23, 1983 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Don Callen officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Flag presentation by the Clarence Shurtz Post of the American Legion and Masonic rites were held. Visitation was held on Sunday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
