Mrs. Jane Marie Dewel died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. A. Thorpe, of East Call street, she had for more than four years been in feeble health. Following an attack of stomach complaint to which she was subject, heart weakness developed Friday morning and caused death.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon at 2:30 by the Rev. C. V. Hulse, Methodist pastor, at the Methodist church, and burial was made in the family lot in Riverview cemetery.

Mrs. Dewel, who was in her 77th year, was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, March 22, 1857. Her father enlisted in the Union army and died of typhoid fever contracted in the service. Her mother was left with several children, who were reared on a farm in St. Lawrence county. Mrs. Dewel was the last of her immediate family. Her maiden surname was Shoen.

Married in 1874, before she was 18, Mrs. Dewel and her husband, Ira G. Dewel, who died four years ago last January, first ran a small hotel, then farmed in St. Lawrence county. Tiring of the stony, unproductive soil of northern New York and yielding to the call of the then far west, they came to Iowa in 1880, and settled at Goldfield in Wright county, near where a married sister of Mr. Dewel lived.

Goldfield was the family home till 1895, and in the meantime, Mr. Dewel followed in turn the contracting and building, lumber and banking businesses. Then a change was made to Maxwell,
Story county, where Mr. Dewel was successively engaged in the lumber and banking businesses. After several years at Maxwell Mr. and Mrs. Dewel lived at Bondurant, near Des Moines.

About 1910 Mr. Dewel retired, and the next year he and Mrs. Dewel, with their youngest daughter, now Mrs. Thorpe, came to Algona.

There are five children, 16 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. The children are: W. C. Dewel and Martha, Mrs. Thorpe, Algona; Mrs. M. C. Keith, Casper, Wyoming; E. H. Dewel, Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Geo. G. Cole of Cooper. All were here for the funeral, and Mr. Cole and the daughters, Georgia and Elinor, were here, also. Mr. and Mrs. Dewel had one other daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Warner, Maxwell, who died many years ago. Mr. Warner came for the funeral.

Mrs. Dewel was a member of the Methodist church here, also of the order of the Eastern Star, and she was formerly a member of the Algona W. R. C. Since her husband's death she had lived with Mrs. Thorpe.
