Agnes Margaret Nelson
10 June 1894 ---- 22 December 1922

Agnes Nelson was instantly killed in an auto accident Friday afternoon. She was riding in the Norman Nelson car with Mr. Nelson, her brother-in-law, driving. Mrs. Norman Nelson and three children were in the back seat. The youngest is a mere baby but all in the back seat escaped injury. Mr. Nelson was unconscious for nearly fourteen hours after the accident.

How It Happened.

Mr. Nelson was driving south on the gravel road out of Goldfield. He had turned out and passed the Burt Waddell car which was also going south. He passed the Waddell car in safety and then his car caromed into the ditch on the east side of the road and went along a few rods and then apparently tried to climb the east bank which it could not do, and it turned over toward the west into the bottom of the ditch, wheels up. Miss Nelson was instantly killed. Her skull was fractured, and her neck broken. The right side of her [not legible] of which would probably have proved fatal. The car slid along in the ditch at least its own length before it stopped. This pulled the top to the back part of the car, saving Mrs. Nelson and the children. Burt Waddell stopped his car and gave them immediate assistance, as did A. B. Smith, who came onto the scene of the accident a few minutes after it occurred. They could not release either Nelson or the dead girl until more assistance arrived. However, Mrs. Nelson and the children were able to crawl out of the rear door which had sprung open. Nelson himself was caught under the side of the car. His face was badly lacerated, one eye being almost gouged out. The socket was filled with sand and dirt, the eye itself being nearly forced out of the socket. His arm and shoulder were badly bruised. Otherwise, he was unhurt. He regained consciousness about seven o'clock Saturday morning. The accident occurred at five o'clock the day before.

Mr. Waddell, Mrs. Waddell, and Miss Emma Waddell all saw the accident and cannot see what caused the car to go into the ditch in the first place and are at a loss to know why it attempted to ascend the east bank of the ditch. The road at the point of the accident is wide and smooth. It is about three-quarters of a mile south of the first turn in the road south of Goldfield.

Help Summoned From Town

Mr. Waddell telephoned to town for help and Kubitschek & Kastler went out and brought in Miss Nelson and A. B. Smith and another party brought in Nelson in Mr. Smith car. He was cared for at the O'Toole-Christensen hospital and was able to go to his home Monday.

The funeral services for Miss Nelson were held Sunday afternoon at the home and at the United Lutheran church, with Rev. Severtson in charge. The burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
