June 11, 1938 ---- November 22, 2020

Verdell L. Lunning, 82 of Forest City died Sunday, November 22, 2020 at MercyOne Medical Center North Iowa under hospice care. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, November 27, 2020 at Schott Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St. Forest City, Iowa 50436 with Pastor Rod Hopp of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Upon state restrictions, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed. Burial of cremains will be held at a later date in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Verdell Lunning memorial fund in care of the family.

Verdell Loren Lunning was born June 11, 1938 in Clarion, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Anola (Helland) Lunning. Verdell grew up in the Crystal Lake area and after graduation in 1956 he served the in the United States Military. In 1960 he married Leola Frances Mason in Crystal Lake, Iowa, to this marriage three sons were born, Steve, Scott and Kevin. They made their home in Forest City and Verdell worked at the North Ag Fertilizer Plant. After a few years they moved to Waldorf, Minnesota where he was the Fertilizer manager. They moved back to their roots and Verdell started working for Polar Chemical and then the Farmer’s Coop in Forest City until he retired. After retirement he worked part time in the summers for the County Conservation.

Verdell was a workaholic but in his free time enjoyed the outdoors. He especially loved to fish, deer hunt & pheasant hunt. He always looked forward to the annual deer hunting weekend with his family and friends every year (which to this day is still a tradition with his sons and grandsons.) After he retired, he also enjoyed his “2:00 P.M. coffee time” everyday with his friends at Shooterz. Verdell enjoyed spending time with his wife Lee until her passing in 2006. Spending time with his family always put a smile on his face. He was very proud of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always enjoyed seeing them.

Verdell is survived by his sons, Steve (Jackie) Lunning, Scott Lunning, Kevin (Lisa) Lunning and Teri Engstler; grandchildren, Chad (Ashley) Lunning, Adam Lunning, Matt Lunning, Bryan (Hannah) Lunning, Nicole (Ben) Follman, Mitch Lunning, Kelsey (Lance) Barhite; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Kaylee, Emersyn, Aiden Lunning, Cayden and Ethan Follman, Brently Lunning , Holly Lunning and Harrison Barhite; brother, Darrel (Wanda) Lunning; sisters, Denise (Doug) Rogers, Deb (Scott) Loge and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Leola, grandson, Justin Lunning; his parents, Virgil and Anola and brothers, Jerry, Lynn and Roger.
