Cornelia “Cora” (Abbas) Smidt, 92, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 1996, at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa.

Cora was born June 9, 1904, on a farm south of Kanawha, to George B. and Elizabeth (Freerkson) Abbas. Cora was a baptized member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church for many years.

She married Ole L. Smidt on October 8, 1925, in the Peace Reformed Church near Garner. To this marriage four children were born, Leona, Eugene, Lawrence and Dorothy.

Cora and Ole farmed south of Britt for many years. In 1947, Ole passed away. In 1943, Cora moved to Britt and was employed by the Hancock County Memorial Hospital. In 1955, she moved to Des Moines. Cora later moved to California where she was employed in retail sales. She retired to Kanawha in 1972. Cora then moved to the Britt and Forest City area and became a member of the Britt Christian Reformed Church. In September of this year, she entered the Westview Care Center in Britt.

She is survived by her two daughters and a son, Leona Smith and her husband, Jack of Britt; Lawrence Smidt and his wife, Shirley of Britt; Dorothy Guida and her husband, James of Claremont, California; twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Ruter and her husband Ben of Kanawha. Cora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one grandson, three sisters and two brothers.
